Valley of Flowers trek from Dehradun, Haridwar & Joshimath


The Valley of Flowers National Park in Uttarakhand is a UNESCO heritage site home to thousands of Himalayan wild-flowers in Pink, Blue, and Yellow colors.
The blue Primula which is a rare flower can be seen blooming in thousands in the valley.
The trek of the Valley of flowers goes through dense forests, along with the Pushpawati river, and can be reached by crossing many bridges, glaciers, and waterfalls on the way.
The trek to the flower valley offers the serene beauty of nature with snow-clad Himalayan mountains.  
The National park stretches an area of 87.50 sq. km with a width of 2 km and 8 km long.

Hemkund Sahib can also be covered in the Valley of Flowers trek. A steep trek from Ghangaria leads to the High altitude Hemkund Lake.
Hemkund Sahib Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage experience for the Sikhs. Beside the lake, there is one Sikh gurudwara which is the most visited gurudwara in India after the Golden temple in Amritsar.
Hemkund gurudwara is dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh. It’s the highest Gurudwara in the world at over 15,000 ft. 
It is believed that a floral shower from heaven when Guru Gobind Singh came to this earth formed the Valley of Flowers.


Brief Itinerary

Day 1 : Dehradun to Joshimath
Day 2: Drive From Joshimath to Poolna and then Trek to Ghangria
Day 3: Ghangria to Valley of Flowers and back
Day 4 : Ghangria to Hemkund Sahib and back
Day 5: Ghangria to Poolna and then drive to Joshimath
Day 6 : Joshimath to Dehradun

Day 1: Dehradun to Joshimath

  • Report at Dehradun airport by 7 AM and start your journey towards Joshimath.
  • It will take around 10-11 hours to reach the base village.
  • Visit the Alakananda and Bhagirathi rivers confluence point which forms river Ganga at Devprayag
  • Reach Joshimath and check in to Hotel/Homestay.
  • Distance: 290 KM || 11 to 12 Hrs
  • Altitude: Dehradun (2,087 ft) to Govind Ghat (6,300 ft)
  • Stay: Joshimath (Hotel - 3 or 4 sharing)

Day 2: Joshimath to Poolna and then Trek to Ghangria

  • Drive from Joshimath to Poolna.
  • A 9kms well-maintained stone-paved trail leads us to Ghangria. We will be walking along the river.
  • Reach Byundar village viewpoint and enjoy the wonderful sights around. Hathi parvat can be observed from here.
  • Reach Ghangria, have a delicious dinner, and rest.
  • Trek Distance: 9 KM || 6 to 7 Hrs
  • Altitude: Joshimath (6,300 ft) to Ghangria (9,600 ft)
  • Stay: Ghangria (Hotel - 3 or 4 sharing)

Day 3: Ghangria to Valley of Flowers and back

  • After having breakfast at the hotel we will head towards Valley Flowers early in the morning.
  • After crossing the check post there is a waterfall called Laxman waterfall and an old wooden bridge built over Pushpavati river.
  • After crossing the bridge tall mountains rise before you and you can see the endless carpet of flowers in Red, Blue, and yellow. The entire valley is a feast to the eyes and treats to the soul.
  • Flowers like Blue Poppy, Snake Foil, White Leaf Hog Foot, Himalayan Rose, Meadow Geranium, Dog Flower,  Hooked Stick Seed can be seen here.
  • The floral scent in the valley cannot be explained or captured but can only be felt.
  • The carpet of colors stretches for 5-6Kms and ends at a glacier.
  • Head back to Ghangria after witnessing nature's finest creation which leaves everyone in awe.
  • Trek Distance: 7- 8 KM || 7 to 8 Hrs
  • Altitude: Ghangria (9,600 ft) to Valley Of Flowers (11,500 ft) to Ghangria (9,600 ft)
  • Stay: Ghangria (Hotel - 3 or 4 sharing)

Day 4 : Ghangria to Hemkund Sahib and back

  • Since the weather is unpredictable at Hemkund Sahib we will start very early and get back as early as possible.
  • Today is going to be a tough day as the trail is very steep throughout and as we head further you will feel like oxygen levels are going down due to high altitude.
  • We will be taking small breaks en route so that we can avoid altitude sickness., Though the route is tough the stunning surrounding vistas around make the struggle worth it.
  • Reach Hemkund Sahib and enjoy the serenity of a lake surrounded by snow cladded mountains.
  • If you are lucky enough you might find Brahma Kamal which grows only at high altitudes can be found at Hemkund.
  • After spending adequate time at Hemkund we will start our descent and reach Ghangria.
  • Trek Distance: 12 KM || 10 to 11 Hrs
  • Altitude: Ghangria (9,600 ft) to Hemkund (14,107 ft) to Ghangria (9,600 ft)
  • Stay: Ghangria (Hotel - 3 or 4 sharing)

Day 5: Ghangria to Poolna and then drive to Joshimath

  • After having breakfast take the same trail which we used to reach Ghangria from Poolna.
  • Reach Poolna by afternoon have lunch and drive to Joshimath.
  • Trek Distance: 9 KM || 5 to 6 Hrs
  • Altitude: Ghangria (9,600 ft) to Poolna (7,200 ft) to Joshimath (6,300ft)
  • Stay: Govind Ghat (Hotel - 3 or 4 sharing)

Day 6 : Joshimath to Dehradun

  • After breakfast, we will leave for Dehradun
  • Reach Dehradun by 7 PM
